Who We Are
Here at United Kara Quarry, we are a proud supplier of a large variety of quarry products throughout the Northland region. We operate under consents from both the Northern Regional Council and Whangarei District Council.
History
Originally operating under United Carriers Limited, a large transport company from the 60s, United Carriers Limited became a significant player within the northland economy. Following great successes as one of New Zealand's largest privately owned transport companies, United Carriers Limited was able to diversify into different industries, including quarrying.
In June 2008 United Carriers Limited was restructured into United Infrastructure Limited, following the divestment of its transport assets, where we at United Kara Quarries remain as a subsidiary today.
The quarry at Maungatapere has been in operation for over 40 years, since the 1980's.
Topography
Located on a steep south-facing gully enclosed by 2 south to southwest dipping spurs, the gully rises to approximately 170m from the Managere stream up to the ridge crest at the northern extent of the newly stripped pit face.
The site comprises interbedded greywacke and argillite deposited from the Waipapa Terrain over 100 million years ago. The rocks have since metamorphosed and subsequently uplifted in large blocks. The uplift has resulted in the rock becoming heavily fractured.
